I had thought about making this a weblog, but I think that would be too confusing (both for me and for everyone else), because it would be cluttered with all of the things that I tried that didn't work out. This format is easiest for me to organize and keep coherent.
It is gradually evolving, because in addition to my constant attempts to try new things, I am also slowly converting all of the notes that I have kept on paper. I still have a lot of stuff to go through.
Ocelot
Ocelot is now my primary machine. It has the following specs:
Sony Vaio PCG-V505AX Laptop
1.8-GHz Pentium 4-M
768MB RAM
12.1" screen (1024x768)
16MB ATI Mobility Radeon graphics chipset
Netgear MA521 PCMCIA 802.11b Wifi card
I have the following notes for Ocelot:
Rokan
Rokan was my workhorse for many, many years. Obviously, it is quite a bit slower than the average computer these days. However, I picked it up refurbished at quite a discount, and it was the best money I ever spent. It has the following specs:
Toshiba Satellite 1805-S204 Laptop
1GHz Celeron
256 MB of RAM
13.3" screen (1024x768)
Trident CyberbladeXP video chipset
ALi M5451 sound chip
Use "eepro100" module for integrated 10/100 ethernet
Netgear MA401 PCMCIA 802.1b Wifi card
I have the following notes for Rokan:
S_serve
S_serve runs samba, and is used as a file server in a Windows NT4 Domain. It has the following specs:
Intel Celeron 500Mhz
Intel i810 chipset (onboard video and audio)
96MB PC100 SDRAM
40GB IBM Deskstar EIDE HDD
Netgear FA310TX 10/100Mb PCI network card
Netgear GA621 (National Semiconductors 10/100/1000Mb fiber optic network card)
I have the following notes for S_serve:
General Linux
- Digital Cameras
- LILO vga parameters
- Installing Eclipse
- The best writeup for how to create a Windows Domain Controller with Samba and LDAP is located at http://www.nomis52.net/?section=docs&page=samldap. I have successfully followed those directions, and I could have created my own writeup, but it would not be as good as that one. So, you should just refer to that document. In case it also goes away, I have also saved it to pdf here. It works great, but we never figured out how to replicate the SAM to a Backup Domain Controller in a secure way (i.e. with SSL).
- Rotating Log Files
Gripes
I have a lot of gripes about software in general. For now, all of my gripes are listed on one page. In the future, I imagine that I'll have to divide them into several different pages.
